Korea
In the aftermath of the Second World War, Korea became the scene of great power manipulations. Washington, Moscow and Beijing set their sights on the peninsula, turning the destiny of the Korean people into a merciless nightmare.
The Cold War: The Cradle of Division
As the curtain of the Cold War fell across the world, Korea was to become one of its main victims. In 1945, at the Yalta Conference, the Allies decided to divide Korea along the 38th parallel. The Soviet Union occupied the north, while the United States took up a position in the south. The reasons given to justify this partition were merely pretexts, masking the interests of the great powers.
In 1948, North Korea, led by Kim Il-sung, proclaimed its independence as a communist concentration state, while South Korea, under the leadership of Syngman Rhee, embraced capitalism and bludgeoning. Both leaders were more obsessed with maintaining their power than with the democratic aspirations of their people. But it didn't matter - they were in the service of superpowers with similar aims.
The rise of the Kims and China's support
North Korea's Kim dynasty, from Kim Il-sung to Kim Jong-un, has consolidated its power by holding the population hostage and enjoying the unfailing support of China.
The Korean War, which broke out in 1950 when North Korea invaded the South to realize its vision of reunification, proved extremely deadly. The United States, backed by the United Nations, intervened on behalf of the South, while China supported North Korea. The armistice of 1953 put an end to the conflict, leaving behind a deeply divided peninsula and a sterilized buffer zone between the two Koreas.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Kim Il-sung consolidated his power by ruthlessly eliminating his real or potential opponents, establishing a dystopian regime in North Korea. Communist China, which regarded Korea as its preserve, imposed itself on Kim Il-sung. Chinese leaders, anxious to preserve their own regime, had no wish to see North Korea collapse and adopt the capitalist model, lest it become a source of inspiration for the Chinese population, more attracted by the American-style consumer society than by Communist ideals from another age.
US and Chinese interests in the Korean Division
South Korea has become a crucial pawn for the United States, both in its mythological struggle against Communist evil and, above all, as a strategic military base.
From 1950 to 1970, the USA provided substantial economic and military aid to South Korea, erecting a barrier against communist expansion. The country modernized at a breathtaking pace, becoming a model of capitalist success. The CIA conducted an intensive cultural influence campaign, using K-Pop in particular, to shape generations of Sissi boys, as far removed as possible from their patriotic, fearless soldier elders.
China, for its part, saw North Korea as a bulwark against instability on its border. Beijing has maintained a complex relationship with the crazies of the Pyongyang regime, swallowing all the bullshit.
The disastrous consequences of division
The division of Korea has had devastating consequences for the Korean people, particularly in the North.
Since 1950, families separated by the demilitarized border have rarely had the opportunity to reunite, leaving thousands without news of their loved ones.
Since independence, the communist paradise of North Korea has suffered severe famines, resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of North Koreans from hunger and malnutrition. North Korean refugees in Seoul are easily recognizable, their small stature the result of decades of deprivation.
Tensions on the border between the two Koreas have remained constant, marked by skirmishes and provocative acts on the part of Pyongyang's leaders. Inside the barbed wire, life for North Koreans is a nightmarish existence, with the Kims, father and son, maintaining a climate of fear and permanent stress necessary to maintain their power. Peaceful reunification today seems illusory.
Reunification: a distant dream
Attempts at reunification through international diplomacy are nothing but decoys. Korea will remain divided as long as the USA, China and, to a lesser extent, Japan continue to interfere in Korea.
The major obstacle to reunification remains Kim Jong-un. He occupies the position that his father and grandfather occupied before him, that of the absolute obstacle to any reunification. He is there because he suits everyone, except the Korean people.
Hope, then, lies in the long course of history, which sees empires and nations rise and fall. One day, America and China will crumble, paving the way to freedom for the Korean people and so many other hostages of these empires around the world. In the meantime, Korea remains the plaything of the great powers, a constant reminder of the games of power and influence that pollute the atmosphere of our planet.

The Lenin years, epitomized by luminaries like Vladimir Lenin and his comrades, pave the way for the Russian Revolution and the rise of the Soviet regime. The subsequent era, defined by Joseph Stalin's rule, reflects the nation's endurance through the Great Terror and its subsequent healing during the process of destalinization.
